ST VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES
ST VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES HURRICANE BERYL RESPONSE - 2024
GER3 is responding to Hurricane Beryl, which devastated multiple islands in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada before making landfall in Jamaica. Initial damage assessments indicate catastrophic damage on the islands of Union, Mayreau, and Canouan in St. Vincent and the Grenadines as well as Petite Martinique and Carriacou in Grenada, with over 90% of homes damaged or destroyed on each island.
GER3 is deploying its Global Response Team (GRT) to the St. Vincent where we will work with community members to identify families most in need, understand how to best support, and provide the appropriate help to rapidly advance the relief and recovery effort. Likely support includes debris removal, livelihoods support, provision of temporary shelter facilities and emergency shelter supplies, rapid rehabilitation of key community infrastructure, and connecting families with a range of partner resources.
ST VINCENT COMMUNITY RECOVERY PROJECT - 2021-2022
Following the eruption of La Soufriere Volcano in April of 2021, GER 3 mobilized a team to assist with the relief and recovery efforts. With funding from the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, GER3 launched a community recovery project focused in the community of Sandy Bay - an historically marginalized community deep in the Red Zone that hosts the largest community of ethnic Garifuna people in the Caribbean. Through the community recovery project, GER 3 cleared ash and debris from over 60 homes and community areas using a cash-for-work model that provided temporary income to 62 indviduals. GER3 also rehabilitated 10 homes that were damaged by the eruption, and lead capacity building activities. An example of one of these lead capacity building activities was the organic composting workshop, which taught new skills to disaster-affected individuals.
